A rough edit of the first chapter of Shadows of the Quantinex is available here. But in American science fiction, the city in the future was always brand-new, every square inch of it.

In the 14 issues I examined, a grand total of 3 stories (21.4%) portrayed scientists, all of whom were physicists (possibly excepting a butterfly collector who, I guess might have qualified as a scientist had he actually collected any butterflies in the course of the story). Sight and Sound 5:7 (July 1995): 6-7. Davidson, Cynthia. "Riviera's golem, Haraway's cyborg: Reading Neuromancer as Baudrillard's simulation of crisis."

Bruce Sterling, Rudy Rucker, John Shirley and Lewis Shiner helped to bring the sci-fi genre to the public. I have to put in a vote for Vacuum Flowers by Michael Swanwick. I was sufficiently upset, after she died, that they wound up sending me home after a couple of months.

Set on New Year's Eve 1999, it features many key elements of the cyberpunk genre, both technological and social. It came from the underground, from the outside, from the young and energetic and disenfranchised. If I use the first person as speaker, can I change the speaker in between the novel, where one plays the lead and one plays the crucial role? Ligeledes kan en politisk satire, hvor fremmede verdener bruges til at kommentere samfundet med, for eksempel Gullivers rejser, også falde under genren.

Pat Cadigan sure did, and I know of at least one other woman who can testify as a first-hand witness to early cyberpunk’s welcoming atmosphere. Levenson, Thomas. "Bit players: pondering life in the electronic fast lane." Dick’s Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? (1968). This short story has everything that makes Neuromancer such a wonderful novel, only in shorter and more condensed form. Other notable manga include Battle Angel Alita (1990), BLAME! (1998–2003) and Gantz (2000).

There's also no denying that many of cyberpunk's preoccupations have caught up with the present.
